POULTRY NOTES

(Br Chanticleer.)

The Pollard Standard. It is gratifying to note that tho quos- | tion of tho standard for Bollard 1b receiving some attention in l.ne Hp'.se ct Representatives. Tho subject was brought, up by Mr. Nosworthy, who complained of tho poor sample that was li-inu put on tho market by millers. Ponltrymcn have been great Biißcrcrsby the inferior quality of pollard placed on tho maikot. It is not so bad to get brau if you ray tran prioes, but to get bran for pollard when you pay. pollard prices is too much ot a good thing. If. it is impossible to savo any more of tho nutrients intho pollard now being sold, tho Board of Trade should class it all as bran, and fix tho price accordingly. During war time it may be economy to save as much as possible ot tho wheat, hut this does not mean that the oflal derived from it should bo used as an opportunity for what the Minister of Agrioulturo terms adulteration.

Value of Foods. At present prices poultrymcn need as good quality as it is P.ojstb ° to °bU in tor the money. It is. uithcult. to get. tno quality of pollard that obtained a Jon years ago. Good pollard will nearly a sink when placed in water, bran, y 11 float. One only needs, to teHt prcsunMay samples to seo what a largo proportion 'of bran is present. To ta ? standard fo pollard is somewhat of a difficulty, as it would require an army of analysts to tos. out tho various samples throughout the country. In America they have a. stan-. dard, but it is very difficult to get it. enforced. Tho only way to got, justice done at present is to pay out bran prices toi tho so-called pollard.

The Cost of Produce. A good many people imagine that tho poultryman makes * fortune out or we present prices of eggs. Al is. 3d. there u, little margin 'and profit, when tho cost of foods is taken into consideration. _I no "Southland News" says:-"Tha.t Iho uign cost ef foodstuffs is having its efleet on tho working of the egE-laying competition was shown by the half-yearly bal-ance-sheet. The report, shown that tho average oost of food per bird this yeai was 6s. sd„ against just under ss. last year, and unfortunately the output oi eggs has been less, notwithstanding the fifty extra birds. The price realised for eggs has averaged Is. 4Jd. per dozen, against Is. 4d. last year, but this has not, by any means compensated for the ;"«';e aG ; ed coat of food. There is nc, doubt that cbes cannot bo produoed at less than is. 6d. per dozen under existing conditions, eicepting at a loss to tho poultryman.

Some Oood Hatohes. -• "E.H." writes: "This year I have had some extra good hatches of chicks, and 1 think my last two attempts arc worth recording. Firstly, I had MS eggs left in my machine when I closed up tor the last time; I hatohed 225 chicks- My last attempt, I had 283 eggs left in when X closed the machino up, and 1 hatched 266 chicks from them, and ovcry one was a plum. I might say that I attribute my good results through giving them plenty of airing, and never dosing my machines up -until tho end of. tho I have this year hatched 930 ohick6. These, are really good resulis. There is no doubt that airing freely is conducive to-good hatches. Tho hen, in addition to leaving the nest daily, iB constantly rising oft the nest, and airing the eggs. In warm weather, it, is safe to air the eegs fully one half-hour twice a, day. "H.D." writes-.—"Can you tell mo if any white-faced Black' Spanish Anconas or Blue Andalusians aro bred in the Dominion? I am particularly interested in the Bine Andalusians. and would like to know who has them in a pure_ strain. Also, aro Kaffir corn or the grain Kaoliangs grown for fowl feed in New Zealand? I am trying Manchu Kaoliang this year, and also Japanese buckwheat. This last is, I find, a- grand green crop as well as a good grain produce." There arc very few Black Spanish breeders in New Zealand, though Anconas and Andalußians still have a few supporters. Kaffir corn is not grown in Now Zealand. Its purposo is served by our,own maize, which is excellent quality. Glad to note yon aro meeting with success in your experimental work.
