SMART SALVAGE WORK. How the ferry steamer Waireka was refloated constitutes something o£ a record In strenuous effort, well thought out and skilfully directed. Late last Thursday afternoon the Waireka was blown ashoro near Portobollo in a heavy gale. On succeeding tides, ineffectual efforts were made to refloat her. At 10 minutes past noon on Saturday Messrs. Miller Bros., of Port Chalmers, entered into a contact with the Peninsula Perry Company, on the "no cure no pay" principle, to refloat the Waireka and have her at the Portobello wharf ready for Monday's holiday running. Saturday's forenoon tide had beon missed, but the contractor? had their staff promptly over from Port Chalmers, and
everything was ready for Saturday evening's tide. When the tide ebbed sufli-. cicntly a big gang of men got to work with picks, shovels, wheelbarrows, crowbars, hoes, etc.. to dig out the steamer, which had driven up 18in. abova high-water mark by the force of the gale. After four hours' hard work by tho men, who had been "working like niggers," n« the saying goes—in the water, up to the knees in most cases—approximately 180 yards of shingle and stones had been removed. This was done in order that the vessel might, drop into deeper water when tho tide rose' again. At high water the "purchase." which had been connected to run-out kedge anchors, was tightened, and the Waireka slipped into deeper water. The job was successful. This meant that the steamer was refloated in less than 22 hours after the contract was fixed. CARGO FOR. PIOTON AND BLENHEIM. Tile Uoriuua, which will.sail to-day for Pieton and Ouehuuga, will, until 11 a.m., receive* cargo for Pieton and .Blenheim. Passengers leaving Auckland by steamer oro now required to open up their luggage for examination by tne military guards at the wharf gates. The scow Hazel Reptou left Grcymouth on Thursday for Wellington, where she is due about Tuesday. The Wellington Steamship Company announce that thoy will dispatch steamers for Wanganui and New Plymouth on Monday and Tuesday. Tho Hinemoa erected a beacon in the Bay of Islands, and is to sail at noon to-day for Caps Maria van Diemen. The Kakapo and Kamona are duo hero to-day with coal from the West Coast. The Kakapo will discharge a full cargo here, and the Kamona, after discharging a part cargo, will Bail this evening for Auckland. Tho Waimca will leave Nelson on Monday for Now Plymouth, Wanganui, and Wellington, arriving here, on Thursday. She will sail the same day for Nelson and West Coast.
