TWO NURSES KILLED
ACCIDENT ON THE MONGOLIA, [ Details ore to hand, says the "Nursing Mirror," of the accident on board the Mongolia., when two nurses were killed and one injured. The vessel was bringing tho members of tho American Eed Cross base hospital, Unit No. 12, recruited at North-Western University, Evanston, to England, en icute for service in. France. Most of the passengers were cssembled on deck, about 200 miles off Sandy Hook, to witness practice by three guns on board. Four barrels were lashed together aud thrown overboard to represent aa imaginary submarine, and shells were fired at it. One of these struck the water in a peculiar manner, and boomeranged directly back to tho ship. Mrs. Edith. Avres was hit and fell dead on to the deck. It was afterwards, found that a jagged piece of tho brass plate had penetrated to the brain.. Miss Helen Burnett Woods sank back motionless into her chair, with a wound abovo tho heart, which, proved fatal. The third, Miss Matzen, was severely cut about the throat and head. It is hopod that Miss Matzen will recover. After her wounds had been dressed she was taken to the New York Navy Yard Hospital: Tho funeral of Mrs. Ayres and Miss Woods was attended .by 150 nurses and workers attached to the Eed Cross, tho coffins being draped with American flags and covered with flowers brougnt by their fellow-nurses.
Eastjbonrne's effort on behalf of the Red Cross "Our Day" appeal has been entirely successful. A sale of goods held on Ootober 29 resulted in a gum'of ,£lO6 being raised. This amount has been further supplemented by the proceeds from various concerts, dance recitals, and picture entertainments, which -will bring the total amount raised lip to .£lB5. Cf this e.rummt J!173 has already been handed' to the executive committee of the "Our Day" l'und. Great credit is duo to the local ladies' committee and all those who assisted for the successful manner in which the arrangements in connection with the appeal, woro carried out. A meeting of the Society for the Protection of Women and Children was held yesterday afternoon. Mrs. W. A. Evans presided. There were .'present' Jlesdames Or. Ponsonby, J. Kirlccnldie, Chapman, Griffiths, Miss Parlane, and Dr. Patersou. Cases which had been investigated ■were reported upon and help rendered where necessary. Others were being attended to.
