UNDISCHARGED BANKRUPT
INSOLVENT A SECOND TIME. William Ham, settler, of Berhamporc, recently filed his petition in bankruptcy, and in his statement the unsecured liabilities were staled at JJ7S, made up as follows;— Bank of Australasia, 4115, John Williams (To Aro Meat Co.), <£!o; Charles Eend, hairdresser, .£10; and Charles Hills, cabinetmaker, JUS. Tho meeting of the creditors was to have Iwen held in the Official Assignee's office on Wednesday morning, but there was no Quorum present, the only creditor represented being tho Bank of Australasia, for whom. Mr. f. Young appeared. Tho bankrupt stated, when examined by Mr. Young, that ho never kept books, as iiis business did. not require any book-keep-ing. Since early in February of this year he had been working for the city corporation and the Westport Coal Company as a contractor. He had earned about .£lO a week from the corporation, and about £12 a week from tho Westport Coal Co. After paying . expenses he made about £2 per week. The work occupied about two or three days a week, and for the rest of the week he did nothing. He was bankrupt about ten years ago, but never applied for his discharge becauso he thought it unnecessary to do so. He had since paid his former creditors 20s. in the .£l, but the payments were not made through the Official.Assignee. Ho arranged for an overdraft with tho Bank of Australasia. Ho did not tell the manager of the bank that he was an undischarged bankrupt or that he was getting J3OO from tho corporation. Nothing was mentioned about his making £2 per week; he was just taking the job over. Ho owed ,£;!5 to Mr. John Williams, the money having been lent to him to pay a fine for being on the streets for the purpose of betting. He owed £10 to Mr. Charles Bead, who had lent him tho amount to help to pay a fine, and he owed ,£25 to his son-in-law, Mr. Charles Hills, for board and lodging. Bankrupt slated that he was a widower, and had no property. No creditors had been pressing him except the bank, and the amount due would be paid anv day. It was a coincidence that in iiis former bankruptcy his liabilities were £15.
The easo was adjourned at this pending such further action as the partics concerned may decide upon.
