CITIZENS' CHRISTMAS GIFT FUND
A general meeting of the Citizens' Christmas Gift Fund Committee was held on Tuesday night at the Town Hall. There was a full attendance of members, and sub-committees made reports in regard to various arrangements. On St. Andrew's Day, November 30, ten stalls will be working emblematic of the various sports bodies—these are to be assisted by a great gathering of Highlanders with pipers. Clans are coming along to assist from the Wairarapa and the "Manawatu, Many other matters ot interest were discussed. A monster candlo is to be- lighted, and the public will be aslced to guess how long it wiU burn. A watch presented by a member of the committee is to bo wound up, and the person making tho nearest note of tho stopping time will win the trophy; also a valuable coin dated nearly 30U years back has been donated by Mte. Lafferty. Many ladies have notified their intention of assisting in tlm effort, and their offer is being gladly accoptcd. The sports section expects to put. on it fine programme at tho Basin Ueserve </" Saturday, Dccdiriber 1, when special features will bo events for soldiers. Coupons ore now to be offered to the public, on payment of 2s. Gd. a card bearing tho contributors nnrue and address will be included in a parcel going to a eoldier at the front, with a few words of cheery greeting. This scheme is expected to bu very acceptablo to tho_ public who uro most willing to assist in a good cause.
