A SPLENDID ADVANCE
MINOR ATTACKS BY THE BRITISH SEDITION IN IRELAND GERMANY FOMENTING A REBELLION Unexpectedly, the Fronch have struck an effective blow at the German defences on the Aisne, carrying their advance line from the famjsus Cheniin-de3-Daraes to the counter-slopes overlooking the Plain of Laon, and incidentally capturing a fort, several villages, 7500 prisoners, aud twenty-five guns. Meanwhile the British, in minor attacks, are improving their new positions, in the Houthulst-Poelcapelle area. The German offensive in the Baltic is slowly developing, and expert opinion is divided on the question whether the enemy is really making Petrograd his objective. The weight of reported opinion is against the idea that the Ger- , mans can develop an offensive on Petrograd during the winter, bat one authority J8 more pessimistic, regarding the capture of Rigii and tho seizing of the islands as definite phases of such an offensive. Mr. John Redmond, the Irish Nationalist Leader, raising a discussion on the Irish . question in the House of Commons, evoked from Mr. Lloyd George a candid statement of the present condition of affaire. According to his statements, Germany is furtively fomenting another rebellion; thousands of young Irishmen havo been enrolled in tho Sinn Fein cause, and, it is stated, are being munitioned by German efforts. The objective of this movement is secession, which, said Mr. Lloyd George, amid cheers, could not possibly be entertained.
