MEETING OF THE COUNCIL. Tbo ordinary meeting of the Lower HuU Borougn Council held last evening. Tno'Slayor (Mr. it. Baldwin) presided, and thero wero also present Councillors J. M'Dougall, W. 0. Tub nso of the recreation ground for schoolboys' 1 cricket 'during the season was granted, and the use of the ground aud pavilion was granted (lio I'ltzhcrbert Terrace Girls' School for tho school sports on November 5. The wages of tho men engaged in clearing debris from tho Eastern Hutt and Everest Creek culverts were increased to 2s. per hour, owing to tho arduous liafcuro of the work, the men having to work iu a cramped position. Tho engineer's report stated that tho manholo at the eastern septic tank had been cleared at a. cost of £29 ISs. 7d. j The pipes for the effluent outfall at the western septic tank had been placed in I position, and the effluent was being carried to tho deep water satisfactorily. The racecourse creek had been closed to as far as White's Lino, and the work of clearing out the culvert in Marsdoit Street had been commenced. The total water, connections to date numbered 1057, and gas connections 637. With .respect to Huggins's Gtil\v tho engineer reported that Ihe culvert at tho end of tho gully was clear, but tho stream bed was much silted up, so that a very slight obstruction to tho pipes would causo the stream to overflow. The whole of Ihe stream, culvert roads, etc., wero on private property,' and it' was dccided to call upon The property owners to clear out tho drains. The engineer also reported that it would bo possible and 6afo to widen the footway, and ho estimated the cost of tha work at .£270 to .£3OO. Councillor A. Hobbs and tho Town Clork submitted a rough scheme for the regular removal of house Tefuse in the borough. According to this scheme j:ho borough is to be divided into fivo districts. In the sparsely-populated areas tlio removal is lo be made onco a month, and in Ihe business area' onco a week or onco a fortnight. The report of the No. 2 Committee recommended that Mr. Sedgwick be informed that tho council has not the staff available to instal gas in his houso. That the engineer bo instructed to ascertain whether ■prestolito cylinders can hn applied to street lamps, and if so at what cost.
