WITH THE ITALIAN AIR RAIDERS
GIIEAT SWOOP ON POLA. The air raid on the Austrian military establishments in Pola in August last was carried out by 36 Italian machines, but, owing to the haze, only a part of them succeeded in identifying the objectives assigned to them. They regained, therefore, from ftbrowifig bombs in order not to hit t£e town and nroduce casualties among the civil population, and returned to their base without having accomplished any offensive action. The principle adopted by the Italians in such cases is worthy of notice, and is in direct contest with that of the Austrians, who, even in these nights of full moon, have thrown bombs on many inhabited localities along the sen coast and in the- plain of Yenetia. from the mouth of the Po to that of Mie Isonzo.
When the first group of Italian aeroplanes, accompanied by motor launches, which marked the route, arrived over Pola. the anti-aircraft defences, warned by the whirr of the motors, turned ou ail thoir'searehlights. One of the Italian machines then loosed a parachute , rocket. The enemy searchlights suddenly went out, and the Tockot showed up to the Italian aviators all the military works of the great naval station. The Arsenal, t.he Rock of Olives, where the base of the eubmarir.es is established, and the fleet at anchor were suddenly revealed.
On these various positions about six and a half tons of mines were dropped by two successive waves 'of aeroplanes. Large fires were observed in the Arsenal, and at the Rock of Olives. Returning home, the Italian aviators «aw tho sky lit ur> for a long time, long tongues of red light reaching high up into tho sky. Though the fire of Hi* enemy's anti-aircraft batteries was very fierce and intense, all the Italian machines returned safely to their basee.
