Objection was taken in the Federal House of Representatives recently by Mr. Finlayson (Q.), to. the opening bv officials in tho censor's department of letters and other communications passing between poisons in a particular locality. 11' people living near to ofle Mother wished to uomiminicalo anything that might affect Hie Allied interests in the war, lie said, they could ilo it in person. The Vrimc Minister (Mr. Hughes) staled that censorship uncording to the statement made by Mr. Finlayson would go entirely beyond the instructions that had been given. Ho knew of no reason why letters addressed from one person to another in the same city should be opened by the consor, unless suspicion existed. Ho would see the pledges given by him previously were observed. These were, that the censorship should bo carried out subject to the welfare of tho Stale, and that respect should ho paid to tho private communications of individuals.
