MASTE/i'l'ON V. WELLINGTON SOUTH. Tlio Wellington South Club Kent a team of a. dozen players to Masterton on Saturday alternoon to play a two-round mate]) against tlia local club. The team wero conveyed by motor-curs to their lodgings; piny commenced shortly after arrival, and there was an interval for supper later on. The first round ended in iavour of the. visitors by a comfortable margin. The second round, played ywterduy morning, gained tiiem further ground, and loft them winners by a margin of nino points. On Sunday afternoon Messrs. and W. Kunimei' gave the visitors a delightful sixty-mile round trip pei 1 motor-car, which included Carterton, Greytoun, Maryborough (where a halt was made for afternoon tea), Ponatahi, and Gladstone. The outing was exceedingly enjoyable, and gavo the visitou? a much truer and better idea of the country than one gets from the train journey. Honours were evenly divided between the two club champions, Mr. Anderson (Wellington) winning in the first round after declining tho Evans Gambit; Mr. Jones equalising 011 Monday by scoring a Queen's pawn, game after brilliantly sacrificing first the exchange and then a minor piece. It was fine ending, and was greatly admired. Messrs. T\ Kmnmer and A. W. 0. Davies, two of the Dominion's lending congress players, figured at lioard 2, and here, too, honours were divided, the former scoring a hard-fought. "Ruy Lopez" game, while Davies won the return game, in which his opiionent ncccpted the King's Gnmbit "for old time's sake," tho same opening having been used when they met in the Christchurch Exhibition Congress. At the conclusion 01" the match, Mr. G. A. Jones congratulated the visitors on their handsome win, and expressed tho hope that his ejub would practise more regularly in future with a view to making a bettor showing when next visiting- Wellington. Tn conclusion ho voiced tlio pleasure that his team had derived from tlio present match. (Applause.) Mr. Ivelling (vice-president), in responding on behalf of the South Wellingtonians, expressed sympathy with the'homo team In their not having lind tho services of Messrs. J. A. Connelly, W. Moore, and P. Kummer—threa strong players who -would all havo been available a month or two ago—and whose presence would have puta very different complexion 011 tho match. Tho visitors greatly prized the opportunity of renewing old friendships and making new ones; and looked forward to returning, later 011, the kind hospitality that had made the outing so enjoyable.
