DEVELOPING THE GREAT EMPIRE SEA. ROUTES. The importance of improving th 9 harbours pn the great sea routes of the Empire was urged in tho House of Lords on August 17 by Lord d'Abernon. Safety, economy, and speed in sea communication desorved far more consideration from the States of the Empire than they had yet received, he suid. Oh the great route from the United Kingdom to Australasia via, the Capo a maximum expense of .£5,000,000 would fundamentally alter iis capabilities. An expenditure.of less than .£250,000 would make the route from Australia and New Zealand to the United Kingdom via the Panama Canal much more practicable for large and fast, vessels, so that liners using the Cape route to Australia would complete their voyage round the world, calling at Jamaica and Halifax.
Lord Curzon agreed that the development of our sea routes and the cheapening of. transport would give a great impetus to Imperial trade ajid Gtrengthon the cohesion of the Empire. The subject had been considered at various Imperial' Conferences, but. could not bo dealt with by a stroke of tho pern ,
