ANNUAL REPORT. In presenting tho annual report of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, the committee places. on record its appreciation of the services rendered by members and the general public bv bringing to the notice of tho society any acts of cruelty to animals that inav have come under their observation, and trusts that this action on their part will be continued, as without the aid of the humane section! of the community a great deal of cruelty may Ro undiscovered, Resulting in much suffering to the unfortmiato animals concernod. The subscriptions to, the society have shown an increase on tnose ot last year, viz., £M 17s. (id., not, however, f rom any large individual amounts being received, but from a larger number of persons who have been good enough to become members and the committee hope the good work the_societv is doing will induce a still larger number to join and aid in the protection of all dumb auimals. The number of cases dealt with sncl reported to the society by the i»?P e . c total 2G9. This number does not include minor cases dealt with by advice, etc. The number of cases in which it was deemed advisable, to bring the oftender before the Court total 17. The Magistrate, bv imposing substantial punis'iments, h'as helped the society, aiid the callous driver finds it is belter for his own pocket, and also a benefit to h« animal, to care for it in a.proper manner. The committee, expresses gratification at the co-operation given to the society by the police, not only vn the city, 'but also in the country, stations. At" the request of the committee ine War Belief Association have promised to find a horse ami harness to help carriers up some of the steep lulls leading to the outlying portions of the nty as soon as a suitable man can be obtained to take charge of the horse, etc. This will give great relief to many a willing horse whose strength is often taxed to its utmost. The. president, llr. Meadowcroft. having to proceed to England on business, has had to hand over the presidency of the society until tlio annual election to Mr. M. J. Kilgonr. The thanks of the committee are clue to the City Council for the promise to provide a water trough in Davis Street, also to\the honorary solicitors, and all those who have helped the society in various ways during the past yeni-. The committee are also greatly indebted to the Railway Department, the ICnrori, Miramar, and Eastbourne Borough Councils for free passes granted to the inspector.
