WELLINGTON SPRING

MEETING

WELLESLEY STAKES WON BY INFORMAL

TEKA SCORES IN WELLINGTON

HANDICAP

The- Spring Meeting of the Wellington Racing Club opened on Saturday in perfect weather, ai;d before-a big crowd* which, included representative Eportsmeis from all parte of the Dominion.

The racing waii up to the standard usually seen at Wellington meetings, and soma splendid finishes tools place. Tho Wellosley State went to tho Auckland-owned. Informal. 6he jumped out very smartly, and never looked like getting beaten. Her party were particularly confident of her euccess, as she had done well since winning one of the trials at Ellesrslio. Despite a couple of serious delays at the barrier the last event was got off well to> time, and tho majority of those present, vrere enabled to catch tho first train to. the city. 6ecretary A. E. Whyte and Me able assistant (Hr. J. Griffiths) had all. arrangements up to date, and the meetingpassed off without a hitch of any fcind. The totalieator staff handled £34,858 10s., as compared with £43,8&5 10s. on the corresponding day last year.

Coalition and Fashion Plato were tfie best-conditioned in tho Steeplechase field, i and they -were- backed in this order. Thf. jumping for nearly two miles was perfect, but then the fast pace set by Ormeeby and Tauira commenced to tell, and at. tho logs Fashion Plato and Blaokheart lost, their riders, while at the big brush. Gaekwar fell heavily. At this stage Torch'y, Coalition, and Ormesby were together clear of Tauira. A great race between the favourite and Torchy ended ill tho light-weight scoring by a narrow margin. Ormesby was close up,' and them came Tauira. Kurapai broke down, and", wae pulled up. Blackheath and Billy Wiggs were missing when the numbers went up for the* Rimutaka Handicap. Johnny Walker, Arrowlield, and Bonny Maid were the public fancies. At the etart Impediment began with her usual dash, and soon had the field strung out. Hounding tho top Quinn's Post was nearest to tho Demosthenes filly with Hastie, Arrowfleld. andl Sardina close up. . In the run home Impediment, held her own. and -won nicely from Bonny Maid, who just beftt the fast* finishing Johnny Walker. Next came Aγrowfield. who did not get a- uood Baeeftge in the Btraight, Quinn's Poit. and Sardinia. The winner is one of tho useful Demosthenes breed. She is a flue bur three-year-old filly, and is a Eood advertisement for her sire. Generally speaking, they were a eooSlooking lot of two-year-olds in the Taita Handicap, but several ol them were obviously backward. The bracketed pair Pontoon and Persia carried most support with Karo next. From a good start the field raced gell together to the barrier post where Pontoon and Cotillion were clear of the others. The former resisted Cotillion and Tigritlyo. but succumhed on the post to a lightaing finish by Karo. The winner would have been unlucky to get beaten as she drew No. 1. but failed to jump out. and waß sent back. She had to come on the extreme outside, but was fortimate enougfc to get up on the post. She is a fullBister to the previous winner. Chuckle, Silver Tongue, and Bed BJbbon were the favourites in the Wellington Handicap. These three moved nicely -in the preliminary, but nothing went ae well aR Teka There -was a lons delay at the barrier, due to the vagaries of Orleans Trials, Bose Pink, and Colonel 6oult At. msum mm quickest to *fl»w £ffi«e. and FS& the' November to lower her c /° u " was conwinner Nystad, to wnom reding a * ear . a rt» faToSrKe njjsed the Comment and the *£«$ them aTaboVe 1 .
