DANGER TO THE COMMUNITY
A SWEDE SENT TO GAOL'.
Before Mr. S. E. M'Carthy, SX, in the Magistrate's Court on Satartey a naturalised Swede named Charles J. Johnson was charged that he did procure possession of certain prohibited publications, to wit, three copies of the International Socialist Benew, three conies of "Direct Action," and four copies of ''Boss's Monthly Megariw' contrary to the War Regulation. He was farther charged with the theft of «■ of boots, valued at 155., the property of some person or pereons unknown. Chief-Detective Boddam, who presented, stated that the accused had lived at Eoseneath, and' in consequence of certain information that had reached tho detectives' office two detectives were sent to a neighbour's house at Eoseneath. where they found a bag which had been left there by accused, nnd which he admitted was "his property. The bwcOTtained a considerable quantity ot I.W.Vi. literature. The accused was naturalised, and worked on the wharf. He had been nroviously convicted ot theft, and he took a prominent part in tho 1913 strike. The CMef-Detective eaid tho mnn was a positive danger to the community Accused pleaded guilty to having the prohibited literature in his V°fJ'-™> Ld was sentenced to twelve months imprisonment. The second charge was withdrawn.
A reservist who appeared .before the Military Service card at Hamilton stated that h"e and his, wife mitod ■ M 9 cows between them. Ho added that, although Ms wife met with a severe accident breaking a rib and a bone in her, wrist she was in tho milking shed at four o'clock tho next morning, and did her share of the milking.
