TRENTHAM RACES
PROSPECTS FOR TO-DAY
(Bv. Glencok.) The Spring Meeting of the, Wellington Itiieiug Club opens to-ilay. Big fields era engaged in all Iho even!?, and despite the absence of train facilities thero is sumre to be a, large crowd present. Racing will commence at 11.30 a.m. with the Hack and Hunters' Steeplechase, two miles and a half. Kurapai, the tcpweight, ran a, really good race behind Master Strowan at "Marton, and is entitled to the weight ho has received. Tauira. has been lame since the National meeting, and on this account may not )>e seen at his best. • The public will most likely select the useful Coalition to carry the bulk of tho money. Ho ras been racing consistently of late, Mid seems to be a greatly improved horse. In tho Rimutaka Handicap, sever, furlongs, the name of Johnny Walker at once catches tho eye. Ho ran two good races at Masterton, and should be in tho front rank of favourites to-day. Bonny Maid showed good form as a two-year-old; go did Nottata. Of tho others Arrowfield is the most likely. He is «n improving horse. Nottata appeared to hold her own with Hendra in a try-out onj Thursday morning. There is a big acceptance in the 'J'aita Handicap, four furlongs, but tho field will bo considerably redluced before reaching the post. The probable starters include Pontoon, a big, good-looking, and free-moving colt by Wolawa from Float. He will carry Mr. E. J. Watt's colours. Since the appearance of the weights for the Wellington Handicap the three-year-olds Chuckle and Silver Tongue havo been made favourite. As a two-year-old the filly beat the colt each timo they met, but she is now handicapped for her wins, and if—as is reported to bo tho case—Silver Tongue has improved a. great deal he should account for Chortlo'e sister. Both three-year-olds havo galloped well since arriving at Trentham, and the pair will have a. largo army of supporters to-day. Others fancied as favourites aro Toka, Red Ribbon, Trials, and Paraoa. Tlio lastnamed is a bettor horso now than when ho raced at Masterton.
Despite her failure at Opaki, where the going was against her, Lingerie is sure of a good following in tho October Handicap to-day. The Finland filly has galloped well since arriving at Trentham, and the race she had last week is sure to do her good. Being such a smart beginner will give her a big advantage to-day. Others well fancied aro Aero «nd Noir, both of whom can muster up a lot of pace. In the Wainui Handicap the New Zealand Cup horses can have a race without the risk of incurring a penalty for tho Bicearton event. The Cup ■favourites, Client and Hendra, aro both engaged, and should show up. Tho former rau a good race at Masterton, and will thus havo an advantage over Heudra, who is making his first appearance this season.
Two winners in Lisp and 80-Peep are engaged in the Wellesley Stakes. They aro both smart fillies, but will havo their work cut out to head off Finmnrk, who is a full-brother to Estland. Cherry Mart is another that can muster up a lot of pace.
In the Shortsi Handicap Mr. It. E. Troutbeck's pair, Form tip and Elocution, will carry most support on tho machine. R. Hatch will ritle the former and H. Gray the filly. Miss de Val has plenty of admirers, but tho hand held by tho Hawke'a Bay sportsman appears to be a, strong one. After riding at Trentham to-day, E. Hatch, W. Young, and W. Price Tall motor to Waverley, mid will bo riding there on Monday.
