MIRAMAR BOROUGH
MEETING OF THE COUNCIL. The ordinary meeting of the Miramar Borough Council was ield last evening. The Mayor (Mr. ]?. Townsend) presided, and there word also present Councillors S. H. Underwood, W. Hawthorn, ana. J. Pollock. Tho Borough Engineer and ActingTown Clerk (Mr. T. 0. Fox) submitted a statement of the receipts and expenditure for the half-year ended September 30. The rates, it seems, came in more freely than last year, the figures' being ,£3701 and J51682 this year. In addition there was a comparatively largo increase ■ in the arrears collected, the amount being £323. The 10 per cent, penalty was also larger, boing .£65 as against J - 26. Building permit fees realised .£55, representing buildings of a total value of well over The fees collected during tho corresponding period of last year amounted to £Si. The receipts from the Karaka Bay bus service show an increase of £23, tho figures being ;£95 as against £12, although the motor bus has only been running for' five months of this year. Tho working expenses totalled •C 195, but this included the amount expended on a large quantity of petrol, of which J!6O worth remained at tho close of tho half-year. Tho total can miles rud was 3850, and the passengers .lumbered 11,492. On the expenditure sido tho amount spent on road works increased by J3140, the payments for water were highor by J-SG. the cost oF.maintaining the sewerage system decreased by .£65. and tho amount spent on making connections to the water mains was about 50 por cent, greater. The tramway returns showed that not only had the cash fares increased, but also the amount received from the sale of concession tickets. Tho car mileage charges were greater, but tho net result was that the loss for the half-year was less than for tho corresponding period of 1916 to the extent of <£70. The borough's share of the cost of maintenance of tho Hutt Road was £\2. Tho city tramway traffic manager wroto with respect to the 6.59 a.m. car from Miramar, and stated that if this car started five minutes earlier than at present it would be inconvenient ■ for passengers who boarded it at Courtenay Place outward bound for Miramar at G. 25 a.m. There was only one through passenger whom the recommended alteration would suit. In view of tho fact that tho change would benefit a few at the expense of many he. thought it would bo inadvisable to make tho change.
