NOTES AND COMMENTS

tby glencoe. , !

The weather at Trontham yesterday was ideal tor training purposcß. Only tho tan track was available, and- this did not please all the trainers, some of whom wanted to gallop their charges on tho grass. Most of tho horses did light work on the tan, hut there was a little galloping. G. Price sent Nystad and Birkonvalo half a mile, which took 50sec. Price always escorts Birkenvale on to the tracks with a stock whip in case the brown geldlug attempts to play up. T. Quinlivan only gave his team pottering work. The rTow Zealand Cup favourite, Hendra, looks really well. By himself, Silver Tongue (A. Deed) hopped oil at the mile pott and ran tho first three furlongs very fast. He was then eased to safely pass others doing slow work, and when shaken up got to the end of eight furlongs in lmin. 45uec. This was a very useful gallop, and the Derby candidate will not want for admirers on Saturday. Ho is to he ridden by G. Clarke. Form Up. alone, ran six furlongs, the last half-mile taking 52sec. The goodlooking son of Formative was on the bit the wholo way. Plreaus, who appeared to he saving his hind leg, and a full-sister to Ample in P. Smith's stables, ran four fuijlongs in W l-ssec, with the latter going the best at the finish. Elocution was fo do steady work, but took charge of her diminutive pilot, and galloped a circuit before being pulled up. She appeared little the worse for her exertions. V. Oolello was on the tracks with Tres-

sida and Black Heart, both of whom uid steady pacing. Portland Lady iuinped a couple of big fences well. Mascot was given a couple of rounds on the tau, and was updated down the straight each time. Courtfiuld, who has seemingly thrown off his soreness, worked freely on the tan. S. Reid, R, Hatch, 0. Oarmont, H. Burl, li. and the Reed Bros, wore on the tracks helping with thn work. A. Goodmau, with H. Whitney's team that raced in the south, returned home yesterday. Prefaoo was uuluokv in the two-year-old handicap on Saturday. She was left several lengths at the barrier, but got within half a length of the winner, at the finish. In connection with tho Spring Meeting, which opens at l'rentham" on Saturday, the club has arranged for a motor service to leave Quiuton's Corner at regular intervals from 10 a.m. Tho return fare is 10s., including admittance to tho people's enclosure.
