' MEETING OF THE COUNCIL. . Mr. C. Watson presided at the monthly meeting-of the Victoria College Council held last'• evening. There were present ■Messrs. W. S. Lβ.- Trobe, C. B. Morison, K..C./W. H.'Morton, P. Levy, A. K. .Atkinson, Dr. Hector, Bon. J.-..G. V\. Aftken.'Hov. W. A. ilvans, and Professors Hunter and Garrow. - „ , . Tho New Healauu Society of Accountante wrote intimating that tho society could not contimie its grante to the Lmversity Colleges' under present conditions, but had decided not to withdraw the grants altogether. The society had_ decided to grant X 75 to each of the four collcee in- tho Dominion. The amount "ranted'hitherto .was .£l5O. ' It was decided to refer the. letter .to the'.Finance Committee. ~ ' . .. Tho Finance Committee submitted the following recommendations:—(l) That the suggestion of the Professorial Board je the teaching of geography receive the council's favourable consideration. (2) That a letter be writtoß to the Eev. A. M. Johnson' conveying the council's thanks for. the assistance he has Tendered during Professor Brown's absence. (3) That the accounts for the month, amounting to £1431 10s. 7d., be passed for payment. ... -, ,i The 6eeond recommendation was dealt with in committee; the others were adopted, ■ The' Victoria College Debating Society wrote stating'. that. at the last meeting of the committeo Mr. E. Evans was declared the winner of the union prize for the current year. The matter of selecting the 'hooks to bo "awarded to Mr. Evans was left in the hands of the chairman.
