A STEAMER FIRE
SPONTANEOUS COMBUSTION OF ( COAL. Mr. C. H. Poole asked tho Minister of Marine in the House of Representatives yesterday whether an inquiry had. been, held, as to the causo of the fire on an overseas vessel in Auckland Harbour recently. Tho Minister said that a fire had; Broken out in the i bunker coal of this ship on the way from Newport News, Virginia, to Auckland. The vessel arrived in Auckland on September 22, and lire again broke out on September 24. This fire was extinguished after , some damage had been dono. Tho superintendent held a preliminary inquiry, ami it appeared that both fires ■woro caused by spontaneous combustion. Part of the coal was taken on. board at Glasgow, from tho Fyfe Collieries, and part at Norfolk, Virginia, from the Poeohontas mines. The- rosutt of the investigation was considered to be so satisfactory that further inquiry, was not necessary. ■
