THIRD CLASS CHARITY CUP FINAL
MARIST VICTORIOUS
Ia the presence of a large number of speotatora on Saturday afternoon 'Marist and Institute met in the final for tlio Third-class Charity Cup at Association Park. Tho gaino was bright and interesting. Marist kicked off, and led by Mooney immediately invaded Institute's territory, where Eastwood (Institute) sent them to lho right-about with a hefty kick. Owens (Institute) gathered the leather in and sailed away at top speed for diarist's goal, winding up a fine ruu by sending in a hot drivo, which Hickey turned, conceding ,a corner, which was not improved on. Harist retaliated with a nice piece of combined play, the ball travelling from wing to wing with great precision, and Mooney, getting within striking distance, sent in a nippy shot which Cox fisted out, Wanden kicking out well into halfway. Back again came Jlarist, with a nice passing rush, the ball coming right across from tho loft wing to tlio speedy Spencer (right wing), who, obtaining a nice opportunity, made no mistake, registering a neat goal. Mariat, 1; Institute, 0. Roused by tho reverse, Institute were quickly on tho attack, and Houston and Owens sent iu two shots in quick succession, but Hickey cleared in good style. Still on the offensive. Institute, led by Eastwood, made another fine effort, . but Fitzgerald sent them back with, a fine kick to halfway, where Marshall (Marist) gained possession and made a fine opening for Mooney, who Bont in a shot which weo.t wide. With the ball in neutral territory the whistle sounded for half-time. On resuming, Marist immediately invaded Institute's goal area, where Spencer obtained possession, and drew Wanden out of position, and then passed to Marshall, who beat the goalkeeper with a fine shot. Marist, 2; Institute, fl. At this juncture M'Arthur (Institute) made a fine run down into Marist's goal area, but was finely beaten by Brady, who sent on to M'Elligott, who in turn passfid to Spencer, thence to Paton, who sent in a hot shot that gave Cox no chance. Marist, 3; Institute, 0. Urged on by their supporters, Institute made a valiant effort to score, and were awarded two corners, which M'Arthur placed splendidly, but Marist cleared on each occasion. Marist were not to be denied, and Brady gaining possession in midfield, sei|t on to 'M'Elligott, thence 'to Paton, who in turn transferred to Spencer, who sent in a high-dropping shot, which beat Cox badly. Marist, 4; Institute, 0. Institute made several attempts to score, but could not pierce Marist's defence, the whistle sounding for no-stdo on what was really a good exposition of "soccer" football. Mr. Windley controlled the game.
FIFTH "A" GRADE CHARITY CUP FINAL. South Wellington and Marist played in tho somi-final of the cup (Marist winning by 2 goals to 0). Marist then played Boys' Institute in. the final. It was rather, hard on Murist being called upon to play two games in tho ono day, and although they wero beaten in tho final by 1 goal to 0, yet they put up a good performance. Institute, as was "to bo expected, boimr tho fresh team, had the best of tho game. In the first spell with the wind "behind them, they made matters, pretty warm, for the Marist defence, and on several occasions it was only bad luck that robbed them of a score.' The first half ended no score. The second half was much evener, the ball travelling swiftly from ond to end. Eventually from a centre by Calvert, w - ho was playing a splendid game, Institute scored a good goal through Stovens. • Tho Institute halves wero playing a. splendid game at this stage, and prevent cd the Marist forwards from becoming dangerous. Prom a combined rush, Institute narrowly missed scoring through M'Gill. The game ended with the ball in mid-field, and Instituto -winners of the cup by 1 goal to 0. The Instituto havo just concluded tho most successful seaeon in the history of the club. No fewer than eight finals wero participated in by the various teams, tho club winning tho Sixth A, Sixth B, Fifth A, and Fifth B Charity Cups, and Sixth B championship, and' finishing rnnners-up in the Third championship and Chanty Cup, also tfio Fifth A championship.
FIFTH B GRADE CHARITY CUP. ■ Boys'lnstitute and Island. Bay mot in the final of tho Charity Cup on Saturday. Institute had already defeated most of the leading teams, and as Island Bay were runners-up in the championship—a keen game was anticipated. Institute kicked off against the wind, with a smart run towards the Bay goal. Play sottied down in mid-field for a bit, hut after twenty minutes' play, from the combined play of Howitt and Hanley, Institute succeeded in scoring from a difficult angle, through Howitt. Island Bay smartened up under this reverse, but tliey did not keep it up for long, as Institute soon transferred play to their opponents' end, where Howitt narrowly missed scoring a second goal. Play of a' give-and-tako nature continued until half-time sounded. Institute, 1; Island Bay, 0. In the second spoil, Institute, with the wind behind them, had matters pretty well their own way. A few minutes after tho re-start Bartlett added a second goal, and from then onwards, with the exception of an occasional breakaway by Jeffries, (who came near scoring on one of the raids), it was a question of Institute forwards against the Bays' defence. The Bay goalkeeper played a sterling gamo throughout, saving many splendid shots. Hanley, after many good shots had proved fruitless, scored the Institute's third and last goal. The final scoro was; Institute, 3; Island Bay, 0.
The' Boys' Institute Cadets played and defeated Y.M.C.A. Cadets; by 6 goals to 5. (Scorers for Institute: Newton (3), Tarrant ■(!), Cliote (i), Pearcy (1).
SCHOOLS CHAMPIONSHIP SEMIFINAL. PORIRUA V. MARIST (NEWTOWN). Having won their respective divisions the above teams met at the Hospital Ground, Porirua, on Saturday to decide who should meet Marist (Tiiornrbn) in tho final during this coming week. Tho ground was ia perfect condition, and the weather .ideal. Marist won the toss, and Porirua kicked off. The game was at once fast and exciting, some splendid bouts of passing and combination between both sets of forwards being noticeable. however, Porirua became aggressive, and a fine shot by Leckie from fully twenty yards out struck the crossbar, rebounding into play. Three corners to Porirua in quick succession proved of 110 avail, Burke and the Marist goalkeeper defending in fine style. Eventually the ball was transferred to the locals' half, good dofensivo work being shown by Davis for Porirua. The game still continued fast and exciting, both teams striving their utmost to score. A few minutes from the interval Poiirua missed an easy chance of scoring, a well-placed centre from tho r.'ght wing being badly mulled by the inside men, who missed an open goal. Halftime was called without any Score. On resuming tho homo boys wcro soon attacking, and for a time they practically penned the Marist team in their own half. Tlie visitors, however, defended well, and at length raised tho siego and carried play to the other end, forcing a corner, which gavo them ;.o advantage. Not to be denied, Porirua wero soon attacking again, and after a_ great struggle in the Marist goal-mouth jueckio opened tho scoring for tho local bc-ys. Marist made desperato efforts to equalise, b\it wero met by a. solid defence, nnu Porirua again took up the offensive, with the result that Moki scorod a second goal for them with a hrillimt shot, which gave the Marist goull;t>:ji-i' no possible chance. Marist wero not disheartened at this second reverse, and tried hard bo score. Tho local boys were well trained, und the game was oi,oii_in their favour again. Towards tho finish Marist tired considerably, but, no further score taking place, the whistle sounded for time with tho score: Porirua, 2; Marist, nil. For Marist the goalkeeper was in excellent form; Burke also playod a splendid defensive game. The forwards started well, but slaekoned oft considerably in tho socoud spell. Homo Davis, for Porirua, was the best lioy on the field; Eastwood, WUitehouse, and
