HAIG ATTACKS ON SIX-MILE FRONT
ANOTHER SEVERE BLOW
NEW ZEALANDERS IN ACTION
GERMAN NAVAL CRISIS
VON CAPELLE SACRIFICED AS SCAPEGOAT
NEW PERIL ON RUSSIAN NORTHERN FLANK
Yet another blow has been launohed at the German line on the Western. front by Sir Douglas Haig. A good beginning was made with a powerful attack on tho Passchendaele Ridge, but most unfortunately heavy and persistent rain began to fall, and in the latter end the British Commander decided not to attempt to. reach the final objectives. : ,Tho New Zeslanders had an honoured place in this last advance. The battle, which was fought over terribly waterlogged ground, was most ' stubbornly contested, and the enemy appears to haTe suffered severely. Considerable activity also prevails on tho French front. On the Russian front a new menace threatens our much-worried Ally's northern flank. The enemy, by « smart ooup, haß seized two islands in the Gulf of Riga, thereby; it is admitted by the Russians, securing the advantage of position in the gulf, and imposing on our Allies a readjustment of the lino. The German naval mutiny crisis is still acute. The newspapers demand the resignation of Dr. Michaelis. Admiral von Capelle has resigned, but this gaorificial offering on the part of the German authorities dees not appease public opinion.
