Aa hotel porter, James Glenn, also eighteen years of age, had pleaded guilty lo a charge of fraudulently retaining a postal packet at Wellington. Glenn would be sentenced to two years' reformative treatment at Invcrcargill Gaol. •Edward Howe Shore, aged twenty-one, had been convicted of false pretences at Faliuerslon North. He was a returned soldier, and the case against him had been that he sold articles which had been mortgaged. Sir. P. AV. Jackson, who appeared for the prisoner, stated that tho latter was the lessee of some lands from the Commissioner of Lands. His Honour observed that it was a case of putting on the land a man whs. had no experience ot farinin", no common sense, and no sense ot the value of money. The prisoner had acted in a very foolish manner. Mr. Jackson explained that there was a mortgage of £10. The prisoner had sold part of the security and with tie money so obtained, and other money, he had purchased two sows and a litter ot pigs. He had thought that in doing so he had replaced one security by another. Counsel asked that Ihe prisoner might have an opportunity of making up the deficiency. He had gone to the Iront with the Main Body. < His Honour said that he could not take that as an excuse. He would, however, adjourn the case for eighteen months.
