Tho vessel is dne .hero on Sunday, and will sail at noon on Tucedßy for Lyttelton, returning to Welliugton on Thursday. INITIAL STABILITY OP VESSELS. To prevent a vcescl taking a serious list if holed by a torpedo or mine, tho Board of Trade point out that It is very important that a vessel should havo suffl- 1 cicnt initial stability. It is desirable, tho board state, that tho freeboard of the 6hip should not be unnecesearily reduced by the addition of water ballast, but if tho nature or amount of the/cargo, taken in conjunction with tho amount of bunker coal on board, is such at any time that ii sufficient margin of initial stability cannot otherwise bo obtained, some or all of the ballaßt tanks should bo filled. Tho vessel should not, however, bo overladen. If the initial stability is not so ampin as to prevent any danger of a serious list, and if the vessel is constructed with longitudinal bulkheads, tuch as wing bunker bulkheads, precautions should be taken to allow water which may enter tho vcescl to flow as freely as possible through the longitudinal bulkheads. The emission or smoko is referred to, it being pointed out that smoke is sometimes the only indication given to a submarine of the presence of a vessel, and masters are urged to take Dticular caro with the stoking of the ere when in a danger zone, so as to minimise the amount of smoke env'tted. Tho expediency of preparing a number of wooden plugs beforo tho ship leaves port to be kept handy to plug up all shell holes is also recommended. Suitable plugs it tis claimed, can bo made of spruce, about 2ft. in length, and about 6'n.- in diameter, tapering to 2iu.
