Returned Soldiers' Ball. Very complete arrangements have boon inado in connection with the yeturned wldiers' ball, which is to take place in the Town Hull this evening, and a thoroughly enjoyable evening may be looked for by all attending. Special arrangements have been made for tramcars to Knrori, Island Bay, ind Lyali Bay, to leavo the Town Hall about halfpast one, lor the return of those attending the ball who live in these suburbs or their neighbourhood. ■ The music will be-provided by tho Trenthani Orchestra which is deservedly popular for its excellent performance in this direction. A. large number of soldiers from the camps are" attending, so that there should bo no scarcity of dancing men, a 9 is so often the case whenever dances are given in these days. The decorations tor the ball are said to bo quito a feature. A Miramar Patriotic Enterprise. The Mirainar Red Cross Guild held a most successful sale of work in aid of tho Liidy Liverpool and Red Cross Funds. On the platform at the opening were Mr. and Mrs. Townsend, Mrs. J. P. Luke, Mr. and Mrs. R. A. Wright, and Mr. and Mrs. A. Crawford. Mr, Wright gave an address touching on war and w«r work, and Mrs. Luke followed with a bright and pithy speech on Red Cross work, appealing also for help to tho robust nieji. Mr. Crawford then gave come interesting reminiscences of early Miramar days. Tho chairman, Mr. Townsend, introduced the speakers, and eulogised tho work dono by such a email district. The stallholders then proceeded to <lo good business. The salo was continued on the following day. and in tho evening a short operetta, "80-peep," was given b.v girls under the direction of Mrs. Howntree. The stalls and stallholders were: Fancy, Mesdames Pyoroft, AVnrciip, James, and Gerrio; plain, Mesdames Pritchard and Babbasc; cake, Mesdames Marshall, Harrison, Robertson, and Rabortshaw; sweets, Mesdames Haselden, Clark, and East; produce, Misses M'Kinlay and Naylor; jumble, Meedamcs Bell and J. Marshall; tea, Mesdames Nash. Ross, and Lindup. Mrs. W. W. Rowntree acted as secretary. On each evoning tho Miramar Brass Band rendered selections, both outsido and inside the hall. Tho fjnild am greatly indebted to all those who contributed to the success of tho sale, especially to the Miramnr Social Club for a contribution of -E7. The takings amounted to £61. free of expense.
Wellington Women's Red Cross Committee Meeting.
A meeting of tho Wellington Women's IJed Cross Committee was held .in the Mercer Street Depot yesterday morning, Mrs. J. P. Luke (president) presiding. There were also present:—Mcdanies w. V. Massey. Moorhdiise, Elliott, Blundell, ''Firth, thithio, Tripp, Kirkcr, Rose, Barltro'p, Seaton, Rowntree, Findlay, Townsend, •Toseph, Nathan, and tho lion, secretary (Miss Sybil Nathan). Apologies were received from Mrs. M. Myers, Mrs. Morison, and Mrs. Salnioud,' Accounts wore passed for payment, after which Mrs. Barltrop made an ap;ral for further supplies of old linen, which sho will bn 'very grateful to receive. Of much interest to of the committee whs Ilii! sample of a "'slump sock." which, as its name indicates, is Tor men who have lost a foot. To utako these is praetl'/ullv the work, of only expert knitters, «s they have to bo most evenly knitted so that there will bo no friction of any kind. The matter of the enterlainincr of eolriiers on Saturday nights in Hie Town Hall n-!i<s brought iin f<"' discussion, but was held over, as the Mayor intends to i-nll a liuhlic moctiiijr shortly to lnakn arrangements in this direction. Duriul' Ilin past month 125 cases liavo been packed for transport.
Levin Memorial Home, Tho committee ui , the Levin Memorial Homo lield their monthly meeting on Tuesday. Mrs. Knowlee was in tho chair. Tho matron reported that the children wero well. At the Red Cross Shop the 'Our Day" tearoom will be undertaken by Mis. .losepli .loseph, Mrs. Elliott, Mrs. .1. \v. Salmond, and Mrs. Ffrtb. These ladies will be grateful for contributions of cake, which will be sold for the Our Day effort Flowers will also bo gratefully received, and be sold by Miss Cooper and Miss Moss.
Mies Maud Wheeler has returned from a visit to Haniner. There the soldiers at the hospital are keen on Roll', and they are very much helped in their convalescence bv ,the game, and thoroughly enjoy the exercise. They are greatly in need of clubs; if anyono who has any clubs to spare, would communicate with Miss Wheels, 229 The Terrace, or send them direct to her, she will be grateful, and undertake to send them to Hanmer for the soldiers' use.
N.Z. Volunteer Sisterhood. The following letter has been received by Miss Gill (seurotary of the Cotlfoid Convalescent Fund) from a member of the New Zealand Volunteer Sisterhood:— "You will have lieara of me from Miss Rogers, and when you so kindly sent her .£l5O for comforts at Codford, though she had removed to Walton-on-Thames. she sent me £"a to spend on tho boys down here. I askod Miss Rogers to thank you all for me, and assure you I appreciate tho privilego given me to add somo extra cheer to our brave boys. You will have received a letter from Sergeant Beanland before this, writing to thank you on behalf of tho boys in isolation. Our secretary arranges all tho entertainments possible for them, and occasionally wo send up supper, which is very much, appreciated, and it is announced that tho supper is provided by the Wellington ladies, or New Plymouth, as the case may be. I thought it a nice way to 6pend some of the gift money, α-ndliko them to foel that someone does care, and to give them all the cheer possible. Last week we arranged a big picnic, and took about fifty convalescent '.patients and some of the sisters for a day's outing. Everyone enjoyed the outing very much, and wo felt well repaid for all onr tronble and 'work, and I am sure the New Zealand folk would have been could they have seen them. Some little time ago Captain Daneey wrote from France, asking mo if I could help them with a small donation towards their Recreation Club they were arranging over there, and I sent ,£lO, and am enclosing you his letter and report of how he spent the money. We are getting on very well down at our hut in Camp XI, and find it very much pleasnnter working now than a few months back. Truly, England ia beautiful in spring and summer —not so the winter, especially in Codford—bnt tho boys nro here, so wo must be where wo can best serve them. Captain Danaey. writing from France, eays:—"l cannot make out why you have not received my letter of May G, thankinpr you for your gift of £]0 towards providing games, etc., for the men under my command. It is very liiml to buy anything much in that lino here, and it was only Inst week that we were able to break into (tip fund by purchasing .1 cricketing outfit, which has cost ,E7 7s. ' Tlio remainder we aro going to put into draughts and dominos, etc.. So far I have only had one casualty (slightly wounded), and the men are; very contented with their present surroundings. The weather here is becoming very warm, and so will other events before very lone. Everything looks very black against Fritz. lam enclosing herewith the Recreation Committee's report on expenditure, etc.. of vour «encrone gift of JCtO towards their funds."
The Mayoress (Mrs. .T. ?. Luke) has received the sum of ■flM'from the Miraniar Red Cross Guild and Lady Livorpool Fund. Half of the amount goes to the. Soldiers' Parcels Fund and half to the Bed Cross.
ST. JOHN AMBULANCE AND RED CROSS QUARTERLY BEPORT. The statement of receipts and expenditure for the quarter ended September 30 of the St. John Ambulance Brigade «ind Red Cross Society, whose work is carried on in the Star Boating Club's building, Jervois Quay, will be found in another column. Readers of the statement will observe that excellent financial support still eontimiee to be g-ven .to the committee. Through this and tho immense support given by the country branches, which now number forty, the society is able to send away eixty large cases of hospital equipment every month. These societies have done really excellent work, and tho quality and quantity of the goods -continue.to show ini provement. The work entailed in the handling and dispatching of euch large quantities of gift goods has kept the workers very busy. During the quarter 180 cases of gift goods, valued ot £2212, wore dispatched to England, Egypt, and Bombay, from where they aTe distributed to the various New Zealand hospitals. The grateful thanks of the committee is extended to all those who have contributed so generously and regularly, and also to thoso who have worked so consistently and well at the depot. Assistance comes from far and near, showing that the work done at the depot is widely-known and appreciated. • The Petene Red Cross Shop has again ■ done exceedingly well, having contributed to the depot funds during the quarter tho sum of .£324 10s. sd. Steady svpport also comes from the Woodward Street Red Cross Shop, and the com■•iinittee desires to thank all those who arc responsible for such varaawe assistance. Many schools under the Wellington Education Board have assisted very materially, and the work sent in reflects great credit on the teachers and their pupils. A further sum of £250 has been cabled./to headquarters at St. Johns Gate, through the Under-Secretary Internal Affairs Department, to provide . Christmas comforts for the JSew *ealand soldiers in Egypt, Palestine, and Mesopotamia. -. ' The public are cordially invited to visit the depot and see for themselves tho good work that is being earned on
to provide clothing and comforts for cur sick and wounded goldiers. Letters acknowledging cases and stating- how much the gift goods are appreciated have been' received from Lady Agnes .Tekyll, chairwoman, of the St. John Ambulance Warehouse, London.
Madame Mueller arranged the concert given at the Sailors' Friend Society last evening. Songs were eung by Madame Mueller and the Misses Archibald and V. Mueller, and Messrs. J. Bryant/' V. M'Kenzie, Boss, and Macfarlane. Recitals were given by the Misses P. Jacobs, Perry,. M. Cooley, and Richardson. The instrumental items given by Miss An;kettell were much enjoyed. Miss Ankettell also acted as accompanist. The 6hort story competition was productive of humour and profit. The prizes were donated by the Misses Eous-Martin. Mr. Moore, missioner, who was in the chair, pleaded for readin? matter for the various voyages. Cheers and the National Anthem closed an enjoyable evening.
