BOWLS

THE CHAMPIONSHIP CONTESTS. The bowling season at Palmers ton North was opened iu fine weather on Wednesday. It has beeu decided by the Wellington Centro that the Singles Championship shall be played on February 27, the Pairs Championship on March C, and the Kinks Championship on. March 13. The innovation of commencing the contro tournament this season on .Boxing Day is meeting with the General upproval of bowlers, and as the rink play is ■to extend over four days (two games of 25 heads a day), it is anticipated that the centre will bo rewarded with a record entry. Many of the older bowlers who did not liko to risk the three-gume ft day tournament"' (as being rather strenuous when spread over three dnye), will not mind tho two-games-a-day system, which after all is as much play ■ as nny normally-constituted bowler desires. Fifty heads per day represents, roughly, a walk of a mile on the green, apart from any other consideration; giving the average bowler all the exercise he.may,require. It will also mean that there need be no rushiDg the final game of the day, as has been the case in previous tournaments, particularly! on the part 01 suburban club rinks who wish to catch a certain train home. The new system is one which many believe will become nu institution.
