RAMSAY MEMORIAL FUND
Sir,—By tho death of Professor Sir William Ramsay, K. 0.8., F.R.S., in July, 1916, chemical scienoe lost one of its most ' brilliant and distinguished leaders. Meetings have been held in London to consider the' question of a epitablo memorial, and a very influential General Committee, under the chairmanship of the Eight Hon. Lord Rayleigh, 0.M., F.E.S.j has been formed to collect funds for that purpose. The two principal objects to which the larger N part pf such funds will be devoted are-.— 1. The provision of Earnsay Tesoarcb fellowships, each fellow having, in addition to the fellowship, an allowance the_ expenses incidental to Mβ research, which wonld be on some chemical or chemical technological problem. It is suggested that the scheme governing tho award and tenure of the fellowship should be as free and .elastic as possible, so that they might be/tenable in any suitable place possessed of adequate equipment. t 2. The establishment of a Bamsay memorial laboratory of engineering, chemistry in connection with University College, London, on account of the importance of providing further teaching in relation to chemical and metallurgical industries. Many chemists,' who have gone through their full chemical training in a university, are- called on to plan and carry out schemes for the application of chemical principles to commercial undertaking. But comparatively few young' chemists have obtained the necessary experience for doing this, as the application of engineering; principles to chemistry on a commercial ecalo has not formed part of their training. The Ramsay memorial laboratory would thus bridge tho gap between the ordinary university training and its commercial applications, and would be a gTeat aid to British chemical industries. Up to June, 1917, over .£14,000 had been subscribed, and the sum of over ,£IOO,OOO is aimed at. '
As an old student and assistant of the late Sir "William Ramsay, I have been asked to act ns New Zealand treasurer for the appeal, and I shall bo glad to receive subscriptions from those interested and to forward further particulars as regards the memorial fnnd.—l am, etc.,
J. K. H. INGLIS. University of Otngo, October 3.
