The title given to Muhammad AH and his immediate successors was the Turkish one of Vali, or Viceroy; but this was changed by tm Imperial fcrman of June 12, 1867, into the I Persian-Arabic of "Khidewi-Misr, or, as more commonly called, Khedive, ay a firman, of June 12, 1866, the succession to the throne of Egypt was made direct from father to son, instead of deacendin<r after the Turkish law to the eldest heir; and in 1873 the tribute was fixed at JE692.350 (sterling). By a firman issued June 8, 1873, the Sultan of Turkcj granted to Ismail I the rights hitherto withheld of concluding commercial treaties with foreign Powers, and of maiiiU On n Dccember 18, 1914, a British Protectorate over-Egypt was declared, and on the next day tho following Proclamation was issued:—"Hie Britannic Majesty's Secretary of State . for Foreign Affairs gives notice that, in view ot the action of His Highness Abbas HiUni Pasha-, lately Khedive of Egypt, who has adhered to the King's enemies, His Majesty's Government have seen, lit to Uβpose him from the Khediviate, and that M"h dignity has been offered, with the title of Sultan of Egypt, to His High' nesa Prince Hussein Kainil Pasha, oldest living Prince of the family of Muhammad Ali, and has been accepted by mm.
