FLOOD IN CANTERBURY
By Telegraph-Press Association. ' Christchurch, October 8. The - Waimakariri started rising very ranidly yesterday afternoon, and theresuit was the biggest inundation for three years. About fifty motorists, enticed out by the tine day, were caught getting back to Christchurch, and most of them had to stay-in Kaiapoi. Three automobiles were stuck m the water at Hhnnev's and had to be pulled out by man" of horses. About 100 acres of PniiHV Island are under water. Little Smage wHI be done to stock, but a pood deal of crop pasture may be spoilt. Bealey reports the Waimakariri to be about six feet above normal It is ramin" heavily from tho north-west. The Rakaia river is in heavy flood. Tho flood is now receding. Little dauw age has been done, except to pasturage.
