NOTES AND COMMENTS
IBY GLESCra.!
The Australian Jockey Club's Spring Meeting will bo brought to a conclusion to-day. Tho principal races are the Handwick Plate, two miles, weight-for-age, and tho Grantham Stakes, one milo, for three-ycar-olds. The Toll and Sasanof aro engaged in tbe longer event, and tlicj field in the mile race includes the brilliant Thrice, a placc-gettcr in tbe A.J.C. Derby. Biplane, having earned full jicualtics, is an unlikely starter. The Dunedin- Cup winner Parable pro'duced a colt foal to Kilbroney early this week. Kilboy was doing Rood work prior to his breakdown, which was duo to a- ligament in the near foreleg giving way. „ The conditions of tho A.J.O. programme nrovido that a certain proportion of tec winner's share of the stake in most or the races "Shall bo paid in war savings certificates. Mr. G. D. Greenwood will rcoeive £750 of his Craven Plate winnings in such certificates. Amongst the most fancied candidates for the New Zealand Oup is the Grand National Hurdles winner, Sleight-of-Hand. His latest displays on tho flat have demonstrated that his essays over hurdles havo not impaired the Mystification geldings pace and there are plenty of good ludgee who incline to the opinion that he will emulate Malua's Australian achievement of capturing the biggest hurdle race and flat handicap of the year.
For the third time in succession Biplane, by his victory in the Craven Plate, Has finished in front of Princo Vindis, so there can now be no question as to the respeptivo merits of the two colts.,
Mr S. Green, in addition to breeding the winner of the A.J.C. Derby in Biplane, also bred Percolator, the winner of tho Trial Stakes on tho first day of the A.J.O. Meeting. Percolater was got by Comedy King from the New Zealand-bred roare WafersbooVby Eoyal Artillery from J.empliar, by Apremont. Tho early arrivals at Opaki include Teka and tho beinoathonee— JJautuku two-year-old filly. They have recently liad » change of Btablcs and are now trained by J. Jonee, who has recently returned from France.
It turns ont that Simonides was more seriously hurt when he fell at Haßtings than was at first thought to be tho case. After' consultation with the colt's trainer, Mr. H. E. Tronbeck gave orders for the •gelding operation to be performed, and. tho son of Demosthenes has been turned, out for a epcll. Killala, winner of tho Trial Stakes at Kurow, and Kilrea. who .scored in the concluding event, are full-sistera. Both α-e trained at Hiccartou by P.D. Jones for his principal patron, Mr. 0. W. Etid. It is noticeable that Blackall does not mako any noise now when galloping, and in his caac the throat operation he underwent appears to havo been a complete The stallion The Eand (lied suddenly at Orissoge early this week. He had been purchased the day previously by T. Quinlivau, who was acting for a Wavcrley stud master, but. as delivery was not taken the loss will fall on Mrs. Perry.
