"Tho Waikato River is exceptional among the rivers of the world, in that in no other river is such a large quantity of fine sand brought down, said Mr. Ashley Hunter at the sitting of the Waikato Tiiver Commission in Auckland. Mr. Hunter stated that he had :ome to tho conclusion that at least 2,000,000 cubic yards of sand came down the Waikato every year. Tho quantity n;;ght bo even double that amount. He looked upon dredging tho Waikato as an utterly Tutilo operation for the purposes of improving it for navigation purposes. A family that has suffered cruelly by tho war, says the "Taranaki News," is that of tho Hamblyns, of Tariki. Five boys volunteered, and went to the front. Four have been killed, and tho ether wounded. Amongst the first who were balloted was tho sixth, and remaining son, who was helping his father r.n tho fnrm. An appeal was lodged, but dismissed, and the boy is now on his way to tho front. Mr. H. Okey, M.P., who is looking after the of the northern part of Captain nine's district, interested himself in the case, and as a result of his representations the Defence Minister at onco agreed to. cable the authorities at Home and relieve tho boy from further military service. He will roturn by the first available ship. Miss Ada Iteeve and tho members of her company are to pay a visit to the Viotoria Hospihl for Soldiers at Newtown this aitocaoon.
