SUNDAY SCHOOL UNION

The council of the Sunday ScSeol Union met last evening. Mr.' Alex. Johnston, president/was in tho chair, and nine delegates were present. Reports on »arious meetings that had..been held were presented and discussed.- It was reported by tho president that owing ito the prize-list being more than double that of last year, and also to the increased cost of books, and printing, there was a very big deficit in the funds. ;' The president and secretary had canvassed a number of friends and still had'a few to see. A liberal response had been made to the appeal for help, and it was hoped that when the canvass was- completed the financial position would be satisfactory. It was decided not to hold any special meetings for the days of prayer for Sunday schools, which will ,be observed on October 21 and 22, hut it hoped that the individual schools, will hold one or two meetings among their own workers. The long service diploma, granted to Mr. W. G. Holdsworth, was presented by the president in a happy speech, to which the recipient replied. Sailors' Friend Society, ' Another ✓o£ the popular concerts was nrranged at the Sailors' Friend Society last evening by Mrs. B. J.' Child.. Tho programme was made up of .recitals, Eongs, \ instrumental items, and story. The short-story competition was productive of much fun and interest. Mr. Moore, Missioner, thanked all those who 'had recently sent in discarded hooks and pleaded for further gifts. The performers, were: Mrs. "Child, and the Misses Hawkes, Bichardson, Bimock, Evans, Taylor, and Kelly, and Messrs.'RichardEon, 'i Miss Hawkes was at the piano. The vote of thanks was very enthusiastic. ' ' Miss Ada Reeve was the guest of Their Excellencies the Governor-General and the Countess of Liverpool at afternoon tea at Government House yesterday.
