LORD NORTHCLIFFE'S VIEWS
AMERICA MUST SUPPLY THE SHIPS New York, October 2. Lord Northcliffe, British High Cumlhissioner in tho United States, in a special interview for the United Press, emphasised that the United States must : adopt strong measures to meet the Üboat danger, to protect the new United States Army on its way to Franco and to guaranteo its supplies. Ho believes that Germany has established a base on the French coast, and is concentrating her efforts in order to wreck the United States supply system. Lord Northcliffo stressed on Sir Joseph Maclay's declaration that the United States must construct six million tons of shipping a year in order to keep up tho Allies' military efforts, and must create nn army of shipbuilders, who are just ns essential as soldiers. Lord Northcliffo pointed out that there is no real decrease in the total Allied sinkings. Ho did not contradict tho report of Mr.. Grasty on September 24, but qiioted as an instance, the latest French losses. "Nothing has altcredmy conviction," he said, "that the combined shipyards and navies , of the Allies must make a superhuman effort to overcome the losses. Every thinking American should bo aroused to the greatest problem the world has ever faced, namely, -tho transportation for three thousand miles of the United States Army and its huge supplies. The United States must rely on its own shipping.'"—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assu. ... ■ ~,,', ("Mr. Grasty's statement was that the shipping losses for the week ended September 16 totalled only 02,000 tons, the lightest since February.]
