The' counting of the spoils of victory in Mesopotamia is in progress, but is necessarily slow, owing to (lie wide aTea. of country over which the various stages of the Battle of Matnadio was fought. So far, according to the High Commissioner's report, 8800 prisoners havo been counted, while many Turkish dead were buried on. the battlefield.' A. Renter message estimates the numbor of prisoners at thirteen thousand at least. Tho Germans ,havo been desperately counter-attacking in the .' West, with the usual results—a vast expenditure of big gun ammunition, furious waves of attack, and severe losses, all for nothing at all. Heavy fighting is also roported from tho French front. The Russians state that they have achieved an advance of a, mile on their Riga front. According to the Volta Agency in Rome President "Wilson is preparing a peace ultimatum to tho enemy, threatening tho Germans that if they do not accept certain conditions laid down America will wage her war in the cause of the Allies till tho Central Powers are completely and utterly ' beaten.
