Chief Detectivo' Boildam, who prosecuted, stated that shortly afler. the vesaul arrived in port it was discovered' that certain goods had been stolen. Just■priowto the arrival of. the vessel the6e meii broke into No. 5 hold aud broaohed tho cargo. Tho . detective pointed out that cargo broaohing was of common occurrence, and on nearly ovory overseas vessel, that came into port it was found that cargo Had been broached. It was a most difficult, offence to detect, and now that these men had been detected he asked that the maximum penalty be imposed. Some ol Uio goods had been recovered, having • been sold to a Bccoud-haud dealer, and the jest tho accused had stated wag under the bunker coal, and would no doubt, be recovered later. '• ■ ■ .Each of the accused was sentenced to twelve months' imprisonment. ■ A youth named Donald William Banks was charged with unlawfully assaulting .two 'other lads. It appears Banks, while walking down tho street, in his ./orklng pants, was laughed at by the complainants, who were "cheeky" to him, and tboa mado off. Banks boarded a tram and caught up with them and knocked them down. Tho assault was not ■at all serious. As tho complainants wero the aggressors, Banks was merely convicted and ordered to come up for sentenoe wjien callFor insobriety George Brailoy, an eld offender, was sent to gnol for one Peter Burke, who was found helplessly drunk in. JUDGMENT SUMMONS. Judgment summons cases were dealt nith as follow:—M.Hogsderi was ordered to pay the Evans Bay Timber Company £8 13s. 7d, by instalments of £1 per month; Garnet B. Holmeß was ordered to pay the Wellington Publishing Oomn&ny, Jjtd,, £30 Iβ. 6d. by October 18, or serve. 21 days' imprisonment; H. l\ Whitp was ordered to pay H.
