A QUESTION OF NATIONAL IMPORTANCE

Sir,—l deem the present opportune to place "before your readers a tew facts that are assuming an aspect of national" importance, viz., Save the people of Jiwv Zealand awakened to the necessity for prpduotion and thrift? Do they fully realise that the Empire needs all the food that can be spared to help maintain her fighting forces in the f.ring Hue ? Look! If you are unable to be in the firing line it is within your leach to be in the producing line. Labou/ at the present time is very limited—all tne •more reason to do more than ever before. This is your chance, grasp it, by helping to grow food for the men who are fighting for you. The Allies need all the food that you can produce. Every, Jittle helps. You are now held responsible for the supply of food that-is oventually to feed our fighting heroes aii'ay in the fighting line —your, fighting line i 6 perhaps, within the small spaw of your backyard. If you' cannot produce as much as you would like, produce what you can. Work" with the right spirit. Put fighting_ energy into your effort and produce NOW and* when it counts. The more you produce the more you can save. Producing and saving are war service. Slake your labour efficient. In war time do not waste timo and energy on unimportant and unprofitable work. Economise labour. Put off unproductive work iintil after the war, and, if possible, help in producing something that is of more "urgent need. _ / Let us not wilfully waste the little labour that we have got, make .it yield something. Make your backyard a productive garden. , Cultivate it with a will, llako your labour count for as much as possible. There should be no . waste in war time. Think' what could be done with" the money that is wasted on our farms, in our factories,. in our homes. Every pound of food saved fiom waste is as good as a pound of increased production. The way for a nation to save is for every individual to help_in saving. France is strong to-day b< cause of thrift in time of peace. The men and women of Great Britain are not only "doing," but are learning to "do without." Practice economy in .the home by, eliminating luxuries. Wasting your money here weakens the fightimr strength at the front. Your savings will help to finance the continuance 'of this conflict to a victorious conclusion. Save your money for the next Dominion War Lean. There can he no better investment.—ll am, etc., . A~C. J. WELSH, Returned Soldier. ■ .Lower Hutt, September 28, 1917.
