THE PRICE OF GAS

Sir.—By your paper of to-day's date, I notice that the directors of the Gas Company have decided to make a substantial increase in the price of gas, one of the reasons given that the taxation imposed on them has been increased by upwards of ,£BOOO. In a time such as we are passing through every member of the community is making sacrifices, and why should not the Gas Company make some sacrifice and bear it, without exploiting the public (the consumers), by asking them to pay the extra taxation whibh I submit is being done, by tlie increase in the price of gas. The directors of the company are to be congratulated on their frankness in letting the consumers know that the increase is being made, so that the company can lie recouped the extra taxation that it has to pay. Surely it is time that the exploitation of the public" 1 by companies and others should cease, and that the public should receive fair play from an industry that is deemed to be an essential one. The directors also say that the price of coal has increased 80 per cent., but they do not tell us that the products thereof, such as coke, and tar, which they dispose of have also been raised considerably in price. Trusting that sorae. v m'ore able pen than mine will taks the matter tip,—X am, etc., CONSUME®. September 28, 1917.
