["The Wallis, or Uea, or Uvea, ' Archipelago; is a small group of islands, totally only 40 square miles, north-east of Jiji. They have been a French protectorate since 1887, hut French influence began through missionary agencies as long ago as 1837. The islands are connected administratively with New Caledonia. The population consists of about 4500 natives, who are of a'gentle and industrious type. To the south-west of the grbup lie th© Home Islands, and theso aro also under the French protectorate.]
