Miss.Reeye in Wellington. That Miss Ada Reeve possesses boundless energy, is indeed what she has been tailed-—"a vilal spark"—was shown by the way in. which her time was tilted on Saturday after her arrival in Wellington from the Waimrapa. A visit to Hie.Returned Soldiers'. Club, a visit to Paddy's Market at tho Town Hall, where she was received by the Mayor Mr; J. P. Luke, C.M.G.), Mrs. Luke, and the committee, followed by a reception at 3 o'clock ijv her honour at the lleturiwd Soldiers' Club, were only some of her activities. At the latter place she was formally welcomed on behalf of ;he Returner) Soldiers' Association, by Mr. Harper, who referred to the splendid work done for tho soldiers by Miss lteeve. ;. Afternoon tea followed tho speeches of welcome, and the tea-room,, lyith its quantities of flowers—broom, anemones, narcissi, boronia, primroses, etc.—looked very gay and protty. Among those who were present were: Sir James Allen, Sir Joseph and Lady Ward, Dr. . Thacker,' Mr. and Mrs. C! R.'-'Smith, Mr. and Mrs. A. Gray, Aire, fatten, Mrs. Adams, Mrs. Perston, Miss Speed, .Miss T.ully, Miss Butts, Mrs. Monro, Colonel Hughes and Mrs. Hughes, and many others. Aii announcement was mado during the afternoon that Miss Reeve had arranged for fifty seats to be set aside in the Grand Opera House for returned soldiers this evening.
As Miss Reeve is anxious to have the autographs of returned soldiers the raombers of tho club intend presenting her with an autograph book with their names •inscribed in it. > In tho evening Miss Reeve visited I Paddy's Market, i£nd took an active part in, the proceedings. Wellington Red Cross Shop. . This week will be a busy one at the shop.. Op Tuesday cakes will be provided by the Wadestown ladies. The first Tuesday in every month delicious homc'-inade cakes aro sent in from this suburb, and are niujili sought after. Thero will also be delightful spring flowors, freesias, anemones, cowslips, and violets. At twelve o'clock the rafllo for Mrs. Hiley's beautiful linen chest will be drawn. The interest shown in this gift for' tho Red Cross has been very great, and the sum of ,£soo is well in sight as tho result. Mrs. Hiley is to be congratulated on k,ei\organisation. Tickets may still be obtained from Mrs. Hilo3 r , Holwon Streot, or'at the shop on Tuesday iupto 12 o'clock. The result will bo posted outside the 6hop aftor the drawing takes place. Next Friday'it is expected will be a record day, when tho Thorndon district, led by Mrs. Massey, will stock tho shop. So many promises of gifts have been received that the stalls will bo filled with i every saleable 'article. Friends are asked to shop earif or give their orders bcforhand, as it is expected there will be a rush of buyers, and' tjie space is all too small. Lady Ward's stall will comprise produce of all kinds, and wiil be on the ground floor at the entrance. Many entertainments havo been got up to add to the day's effort, and already thero is a large sum in hand. On Friday last at the shop the residents of Karori and Makara seiit' in quantities of eggs and country produce. Mrs;. James. Mackenzie was in charge, and had thau.y willing helpers. Tho sum of -£73 was handed in to the secretary, and tho stalls at the end of tho day wero empty, This branch of tho Wouien's. National Reserve is to be congratulated on its earnest effort to help on Red Cross work.

Girls' College Fete, A garden fete organised by Mrs. Urquhart and the girls of College House (Welfili on Gills' College), in aid cf the Ihorndoii Day at the Wellington Red Cross Shop, was opened by the Mayoress, nJi 1 ' 3 '/ on Saturday afternoon. Hie iete*' itas to have 1 been held in the grounds of College House, but, most unfortunately, the rain descended at the ■worst possible time for such an undertaking; and everything, stalls and all, had to be removed inside, where the proceedings of tho afternoon wore subsequently carried out. Stalls had been arranged for the sals of sitects, flowers, cakes, and seiviiig, tha latter including all sorts of duiuiy novelties, as well as children's garments, bags, embroidery work, boudoir caps, lingerie, etc. A musical programme hud been arranged, and was much enjoyed, and afternoon tea, fof which a small charge was riade, was served in the dining-room, -where 6weet peas, narcissi, freezias, etc., added their brightness and fragranco to the scene.

Mrs. WMtbury Hughes, a daughter of Mr. W. C. Chitfield, has returned, to Wellington from Australia, where she had become well known as a minature painter. When in Adelaide Mrs. Hughes painted over, fifty miniatures, including that of Lady Bosanquot, the wife of the Governor of South Australia. This miniature whs presented to the local Art Gallery by Lady Bosanqitet as a' memento of her stay in Australia. Mrs. Iliighos lately spent somo time in Dunedin, and while thero, oxociiled several commissions. It is her intention to con--tinuo her work -in Wellington, and both (o-day and oil Tuesday a showcase containing specimens of her work will ;boiin tho windows of M'Gregor Wright's studjo, where the . public of Wellington can see lor themselves some of Mrs. Hughes's work. It is interesting to learn that Mrs. Hughes belongs to n long line of Artists whoso works wero regularly seen at the Royal Academy, etc. Her grandmother gained no fewer than seven medals for miniature painting, in-' eluding the. Gold Isvs Medal for an original miniature. '

Opening of the Art Exhibition. was a day which was filled. • with'many activities of 'a more or leas public character, and',one of considersßle''.interest', to many people was the opening, of the annual exhibition of the Academy of Fine Arts, which took place in the i Art Gallery, in Whitmore Street. The exhibition this year was of particular interest and'pleasure to those who have followed the progress of art in this city, and the opinion was t ipressed on all sides that a considerable advance had been made by, exhibitors, particularly in water-colours. The woTk of two Wellington ladies, _ Miss D. K. Richmond and Mrs. J. Tripe, the former in watercolours and the latter in portraiture, was very favourably commented upon. Miss Bichmond, curiously enough, being the subject of one of Mrs. Tripe's studies. Some of the small?? pictures in the exhibition were inc :eed delightful. 'A
case of enamel work, jewellery and pottery, . was also of much interest, ' and showed some clever work. ' iHis Excellency the Governor-General opened the exhibition, and after the ceremony afternoon. tea was handed round. Among those who were present were, in addition to the president (Mr. H. M. Gore), Mrs. Gore, Mrs. ..Adams, Mrs. Hurst; House, Mr. and- Sire. Von Haast, Mr, ana Mrs; A. Gray, Mr. and Mrs. C. Wilson, Mrs. E. Hadfield, Miss Williams, Mrs. J. Miss England, Mr. and Mrs. Bowring, and many others.
The women of Wellington are greatly indebted to Mr'. J. B.\Harcourt t-nd Mr. S.-Haroourt for their courtesy in allowing the use of their rooms for Red Cros3 work. On:many occasions lately, for days at a time, the 'entire use of the auction room has been given, and has proved most helpful and convenient.
