At the Military Appeal Boarththe West Coast savmiillers requested consideration of the exemption of sawyers, breakerdown men, and leading bushmen. dlie aawmilllng staff have been so depleted that it is impossible to replace th«6e men., The carrying on of sawmilling was dependent on them, and if they were taken-.by the military 'the mills would have to close down.. If the nlen were exempted it would be po6sible to eke out an existence with the aid of rmv ; xeoruits. , • , , • The chairman (Mr.' Evans) suggested a reduction in the number of mills. Ihreefourths of the timber out waa for export. It was advisable that only tho best n-ills should bo kept going. The Millers Association could agree as to the reduction. . The board asked for. details as to the average output, capacity, etc.
