The Duuedin correspondent of the Christchurch "Press" atatcs that work on the Duuedin waterfront is very slack just at present, there being very few vessels in port. The wharf labourers in consequence are experiencing many idle days. The hold-up of the coastal shipping at Wellington has had its effect in this part, as the steamers John and Putiki-are among the vessels which have paid oil their crews ;i t northern ports. These two vessels were mgularly engaged in the Wanganui, Well®g'ton, and' 'Dunedin trade, and their withdrawal means a loss financially to the waterside workers. The strike ot the coastal seamen lias not alTected the Canterbury Company's steamers, and as these boats visit Dunedin at regular intervals, a fair number of men find employment. Casual labourers, however, cannot, depend on the waterfront to earn a living wage at preseut. The Kapiti went on the slip yesterday morning, and if. is probable that she v-ill be finished with on Satunbi.v or i'nnday morning. The Kapuni, which went i p on

It is reported by an exchange that several ocean steamers now on the way from the Pacific Coast to Atlantic, ports will on arrival be converted iuto roul burners, as the owners claim that the oil companies have raised prices too high to make that fuel profitable. Wheu steamers began to use oil instead of coal, st was selling at 57 cents a barrel, but now oil men want 5.50 dollars (6s. 3d.) a barrel, and refuse to make long-term contracts. According to news from Tokio, 26 'merchantmen, aggregating 110.000 ions, were launched in Japau during August., A further 180,000 tons will be completed during October. After being on the beach of a Canadian port for the past elevcu years, the little schooncr Ida Etta is now in the water at Puget Sound having her rigging overhauled As soon as this work is finished she will take about fifty thousand feet of lumber to San Francisco, where she will be transformed into an auxiliary .schooner to he placed in the South Sea Island tiadc. She was formerly a Canadian sealer. Messrs. Atkius, Krall and Co. are her new owners. Immediately following the opening of the special session of the Imperial Diet, June 21, the Japanese Government offered the supplementary budget, calling for 137,000,000 yen, and five other bills. One of the hills proposed .to stop Governmental subsidies to the leading steamship companies of Japan—Nippon Yusen, 'l'oyo Kisen, Osaka-Shosen, and others. The reason for the bill is that these companies are making enormous profits because of war conditions. They no longer need the fostering care of the paternal administration. The bill does not propose to cut off the subsidies from all the lines—of course, there are a few special services which, are excepted—but all the principal lines, botTi to the United States and Europe, which have been enjoyimr Governmental assistance heretofore, will bo included in the measure. While cutting off the subsidy from the shipping companies, another hill calls for a subsidy for the shipbuilding companies. The Nil is meant to encourage the rapid and increased construction to bottoms.
