DISCHARGED PRISONERS' AID SOCIETY

■ A meeting of, the Discharged Prisoners' Aid isociCty was held in the Supremo Chambers, Sir Itobert Stout, Chief J üßtice, presiding, jkr. W. G. Itiddell, S.M., was welcomed hack after his severe illness. The report showed that the number of applicants was slightly on tho decrease from the preceding years, but unfortunately tho incorrigible and drifters still remain. Against all these drawbacks, however,' there remaiit ed the record of substantial good work achieved in numbers of cases, that 6howed th'e grqat need of a society of this kind. To a great extent employers take upplicants on the recommendation of the society, and in'very few cases are they disappointed. Showing the extent of the society's work, applications have been received from tho Auckland Gaol Governor, also from New Plymouth. It must not be supposed that all prisoners are destitute, for of 564 released their accumulated funds ivas ,£315 2s. UJd., and some at times deposit with tho treasurer of the society money to mind till released. As usual, the weighty problem now is what to do with prisoners' wives with families, sometimes children ill, and absolutely destitute. The following assistance has been given:—s3 men, 99 beds and 131 meals; 1 woman, coal; 1 woman, groceries; 24 men and women, fares to places to work; <15 men and women, lodging and food; 1 men and, women, clothes; 3 men, boots; 17 women, advertisements; 3 men, telegrams; 1 woman, register fee; 1 woman, released goods; 3 men, ship permits; 1 wbmaii, storage goods; 5 jvomeu, cartage goods; 1 freight; 1 man, registered letter; 1 man, trust money; 33 Wonien in gaol, entertained at Christmas; total, 241. Work ,was found for 32 liieli aild women by advertisement and letters sent to various people and friends, and in gome instances money wai* received to bo 6pcnt for their benefit. Four men were helped to go to the front.
