A RECENT FIGHT WITH U-BOATS
REPORTS INVESTIGATED. Washington, September 26. ,The Navy Department has investigated a report that five merchantmen were sunk in the battle with submarines, and has decided that the report is unfounded. The Department is introducing important changes in the method of announcing naval'news.—Aus.-N.Z. Cablo Assn. [The battle referred to is presumably that on September 5, when a convoy of American merchantmon was attacked by six U-boats. At least one submarine was sunk, and two merchantmen were reported lost, without casualty to the crews.] ,
