'[.'he weekly meeting of the Khandallali Literary and Debating Society held en Tuesday evening: was occupied by an address by Mr.' .T. IT. Richardson, president of the society, on the> Maori chief Te Rauparaha. ' Mr: Richardson dealt ''ery. fnllv with the history of this chief from 1 his'birth,'in about 1770, including his from the north to tie "Wellington district: He also, gave a graphic account of the raids made by Te "Rauparaha on the tribes of the South Island, and the bloodshed which ii.variably took place, and which culminated in the Wairau massacre. The speaker also dealt,'apart froin this great "Maori's qualities as a general, with many aspects of liis personal diameter. Mr. Richardson stated that ho had endeavoured to trace the burial place' of Te Rauparaha, but up to the present had failed to do so.
