TO ATTAIN SELF-CONTROL

THE SOUND,MIND IN'THE SOUND ' BODY. "Have the State, clergy, and parents done their'whole duty to tho little ones?" asked Dr. Maud ,Fere in a lecture on the protection of children before the' Workers' Educational Association in Christchurch. 'The lecturer said that in letters from the front many men expressed regret tbat they had never been taught that the first attribute of a man was to exercise iself-control. It was little use for army chaplains to preach at deeprooted, life-long habits of self-indulgence. To give the child sex knowledge without a background of moral principle was worse than useless. If they were going to exclude the Scriptures from the school, let them at leaßt include the teachings of love and reverance for God, and the golden rule. Let them call to mind Carlyle's words: "High intelligence linked with low ideals is responsible for _ the greater suim of human misery." Many parents, having come at last to a realisation, of their plain duty to their children to instruct 'them in sex mysteries, stood aghast with the .piestion of "How tan ■I tell them?" Many fine books, however, were printed to help them in, their dilemma, and she could furnish a list of them. To ensure self-control the best'methods were: "Cultivate high principle by daily feeding the soul with prayer and Bible study? Learn correct feeding of the body.. No Insurious living, moTe vegetable meat and less animal-meat. Avoid animal meat, fish, cheese, and eggs at the third meal of the day. ' Avoid lascivious books, plays, pictures; and companions. Avoid drinking going to bed; avoid feather 'beds; avoid stimulants, alcohol, tea, coffee and condiments. Pay strict daily attention to the bowels. Teaqh every child plainly the great dangers in selfabuse. Always be surrounded with an atmosphere of fresh air. Go earlv to bed and Tise early.: Teach eich to daily endeavour to promote the welfare of others as' well as his own.' This mental attitude is extremely important, if self- • control is .to be attained. Last, but not least, learn- the truth in your own bodies tbat'continence is not only not harmful, but it is vigour-promoting, both mentally and physically." f
