Results of the "Surpriso Envelopes," '.riie_ weather has not smiled upon the organisers of the "Surprise Envelopes" Days (Tuesday and Wednesday), but in epito of Iho deterrent of wind and rain tlio result is considered very satisfactory, the sum of J2CO, ivitli a few small amounts yet; to come in, lmvinp; been realised. On the first day .C 135 resulted, and yesterday's total, mi a still stormier day, was very little behind Hiat sum. One of the things which have struck several peopln who have worked in these street operations for patriotic causes is the way in which girls in offices and shops support the Red Cross work. Most willingly do they start with their shillings, and cases of refusal, are infrequent. As si matter of fact, sonic of the workers in 0011110011011 with these operations liavo said that ten ?ivc to one man who contributes to the cause. Doubtless there are reasons, as after all the 111011 whn are left; are many of them married, with responsibilities to uphold, but; still tlio fact is worth recording of Ivo generous and most willing way in which these stivls assist B iich causes. Yesterday Mrs. I'liltou and Miss TTarcoiirf; were in charge of the depot, ond Miss Kebbell was in charge, of'the tea arrangements for the workers. The bonking in connection with Mrs. V. .!. Nathan's gift recital on Saturday afternoon is very heavy, and those people who intend being present should not delay in securing their seats. There was a verv good attendance of members, and those'intercsted in the cause, and it was decided that they ehnuld organise, and stock two or three stalls with home produce, cakes, Bowers, sweets, etc., to be located at the corner of Boulcott Street and AWllis Street. Much interest was displayed, and with the record of fine work in patriotic causes which the guild has made for itself in the past it may be taken for granted that this undertaking will be well carried out. Evening for Soldiers. Another of the pleasant evenings organised for soldiers by the Mayor and Mayoress (Mr. and Mrs. J. P. Luke) and their Entertain mont Committee was held in the Town Hall last night,-and was attended by a very large number of soldiers. Dancing was the principal amusement provided for them, and the Trentham Band, which had previously been entertained at tea by the committee, played excellent music. The big chamber looked very bright and cheerful with its decorations of red and white camellias, rhododendrons, and palms, and the same Hovers also decorated the buffets underneath the galleries from which supper was served. The arrangements for refreshments were carried out by Mrs. Moorhouse, Mrs. Blundcll, Miss Clarke, and other members of the committee and the soldiers were welcomed by Mr. and Mrs. Luke. Owing to a variety of causes which could not be surmounted, some time had elapsed since the last entertainment of a similar kind had been given, and that they are appreciated by the soldiers is very evident from the large numbers who attend them.
