LAND PURCHASES
AND LEASES-IN-PERPETUITY. One of the anomalies in the land laws o£ the. country now is that land held under perpetual lease tenure cannot be purchased—or, rather, it is assumed that it may not bo purchased—for settlement. These areas were selected in fairly large blocks 'many years ago, and now with the improvements made, and the appreciation in values, they aro capable of subdivision. Mr. Anstey,.reforred to a case in the Houso yesterday, that of a young man about to'go to the front. He was unablo to sell privately, and tljo Land Purchase Board will not look at, his property for soldier settlement purposes. He suggested thnt the Government should tako power to purchaso such holdings. The Prime Minister saul he thought something of the kind would have to be done. The title to the lauds was little if anything worse than freehold, since they had the right to acquire the freehold. He thought it would be-a good thin" for the House to pass this ses&OU legation, if such proved to be necessary, to permit of such holdings, being purchased for settlement.
