LOWER HUTT BOROUGH

MEETING OF THE COUNCIL. I The fortnightly nioeting of the lower Hutt Borough Council was hold last evening, the Mayor (Mr.; H. Baldwin) presided, and there wore also present:— Councillors J". M'Dougall, W. G. Meldrum, J. Brasell, S. G. Clendon. W. Cotton, W. Korr, H. A. Ward, A. Uobbs, and H. Carver. , A letter was received from Mr. J. T. Hawthorn confirming his accepting the council's offer to leaso the municipal offices. A A man who has been called for active service wrote pointing put that, as he was in Trentham Camp as a soldier, he was unable at present to pay rates on his section in the Hall-Jones Settlement, and requesting that the payment of rates bo allowed to stand over, until he was discharged from the Army. It was decided to ask the soldier to furnish further information. The secretary of the Hutt Park Committee wrote stating that the committee was being pressed for payment of rates" amounting to ,£7l Bs. Bd., and suggesting that the amount be contributed by the local bodies represented on the tommittee ip the following proportions:—Petone and Lower Hntt <£30 each, and Eastbourne ,£ll. It was resolved to inform the committee that the Lower Hutt Borough Council was prepared to pay, its share of the rates. The council was asked by the Wellington Hospital and Charitable Aid ■Board to have the septic tank at the Convalescent Home at Belmont put in order under the supervision .of the borough engineer, and charge the coat to the board. It was decided to grant the application. A letter wae received ■ from the president of the Petone Defence Rifle Club ipointing out that the club's rifle range extends over a portion of the. Hall-Jones Settlement on which the council had been aeked to make roads, etc., and desiring to be furnished with information ss to the date on which tho work would be commenced, so that the club may know whether it could have tho use of the range for this season's shooting. The reply sent by tho town clerk that the work would not be commenced until after Christmas was approved. The Green Island Borough Council's letter with respect to the payment of war bonus to Civil Servants was received. Permission was granted the "Our Day - ' Red Cross Fund Committee to hold fancy costume cricket and football matchw on the recreation ground on Saturday, October 6, and to charge for entrance "a silver coin," olso to erect flag 3 on and across the main road on October 2, 6, S, and 22, the latter to be subject to tho approval of the engineer. The Hutt District Cricket Club was granted the use of the recreation ground and pavilion for tho ensuing season on the same terms as last year.
