LADIES' HOCKEY
WELLINGTON TEAM DEFEATS '' CANTERBURY: AVollington scored a brilliant victory over Canterbury in the third match in the ladies' triangular liockey tournament played at Cbrietchurch on Saturday. ■There was a. large attendance of the public, uuil spectators were treated to a notable exhibition of the stick game. Fiactiually all the Wellington pirls did w.ell, but, according to accounts received, Miss T. Murphy, in tho lialf line,'played a wonderful game. Miss K. Skinner, too, was perfectly safe in goal, and the only time a point was scored against her she stoppc.d .the ball with her,stick, but it rose, hit the cro.|s bar, and dropped into tho net. Miss K. Israel did excellent work as left-hijlf. For fully three'parts of tho game Wellington attacked, and the final score—2 : to 1 in Wellington's favour—hardly indicates tho -jupenority shown all through by the 'Wellington jrirls. On two occasions . Miss Williams would have scored had she boon left alone by other members of her team. Wellington's first score came early in the first spell, Miss 'N. Lang securing a gonl after a persistent attack. On resuming, 'Wellington maintained the pressure, and eventually Miss Willianis found the net. Canterbury's goal enme Irito in the second spell, and sound defensive tactics by' Wellington marked tho piay from then on to the end. While in Christehurch the Wellington ladies were excellently treated. On Thursday ni K ht they, were the guests of the Christehurch ladies at a picture theatre, on Friday, afternoon they were entwtainod nt 'be residence of the Hon! J. Burr, Jlwlcliffe, Kumner, and on Saturday mornin? they were entertained to tea at'Digby's College.
