CARNAGE ON THE YPRESS FRONT
TERRIBLE HAVOC BY THE
NAVAL ATTACK ON OSTEND
RUSSIAN PRESSURE ON . RIGA FRONT
ENEMY FORCED BACK
Further details of the latest British attack on the Yprra front Tβvoals a terrible picture of carnage. Tho deadly concentrated fire of the British guns created frightful havoc in the enemy's ranks. The now line has now been consolidated, and held against a series of furious counter-attacks. According to a German report, a British monitor bombarded Ostend, and incidentally, as the enemy is at pains to point out, shelled the Cathedral, killing several Belgians. 1 No material developments aro reported from tho French front in the West, nor from Italy. On the Kussian front tho enemy's advanced detachments have been pressed back. The Austro-German reply to the Pope's Peace Note has been received on all sides with contempt, suspicion, and derision. Curiously enough, it has produced exactly opposite impressions on' the respective minds, of His Holiness and hie Secretary of State (Cardinal 'Gasparri), the former regarding it as favourable, and, the latter as tho reverse. Further peace efforts under the auepices of the Vatican aro predicted. Turkey and Bulgaria have also replied in terms which leave no doubt as to thair desires. One reviewer describes the Teutons' reply as a piece of "vague hypocrisy." The baokwash of the Swedish diplomatic scandal has swept tho Swedish Government out of office.
