It had been smouldering for some time, and men were engaged during the day cischarging Auckland cargo with a view to reaching the- burning material. An htur after they stopped work volumes of smoke issued from the hatch. , The City Fire Brigade was summoned, several holes were cut in the deck and through the hatch and water was poured into the hold. Towards midnight the fire appeared to have abated, but the brigade continued its operations with a view to Four s firemen and two waterside workers who entered the hold were t.vercome by smoke, and had to be removed to the 'Hospital. The vessel has on board cargo for southern ports.
